Why Meshtastic in Armenia

Armenia's mountainous terrain, regional geopolitical context, and seismic history make decentralized, off-grid communication infrastructure essential for civic resilience.

1. ๐Ÿ†˜ Emergency Preparedness & Disaster Resilienceโ€‹

Conventional telecommunications networks (GSM/LTE, fiber optic lines) have known single points of failure:

  • Grid Blackouts: Cell towers typically rely on backup batteries that run out within a few hours during widespread power outages.
  • Earthquakes & Natural Disasters: Cellular networks instantly saturate during earthquakes, leading to complete call and data blockage.
  • Infrastructure Vulnerabilities: Centralized Internet backbones can be damaged, jammed, or disconnected during regional crises.

Meshtastic has no single point of failure. Every participating node acts as a repeater. If a power outage knocks out electricity across Yerevan or a regional marz, the mesh network continues operating autonomously on battery and solar power.

2. ๐Ÿ”๏ธ Alpine Hiking, Search & Rescue, and Outdoor Sportsโ€‹

Armenia's mountains (Mount Aragats, Azhdahak, Khustup, Dilijan National Park, and the Lori highlands) have vast cellular blind spots:

  • Group Communication: Keep hiking groups, backcountry skiers, and mountaineering teams connected without cellular coverage.
  • GPS Location Tracking: Nodes with built-in GNSS automatically share coordinates over the mesh, displayed directly on offline maps in the mobile app.
  • Emergency SOS Beacons: In case of injury, hypothermia, or lost hikers, distress beacons can hop through mountain-top repeaters into civilian or emergency channels.

3. ๐Ÿ’ธ Zero Recurring Cost & Unlicensed Frequenciesโ€‹

  • No SIM Cards or Monthly Fees: Once you acquire a node ($20 - $50), operating it is completely free forever.
  • License-Free ISM Band: Operates on the European standard 868 MHz ISM band (EU_868), permitted for public use without amateur radio licensing under standard power limits.
  • Micro-Power Consumption: Nodes draw as little as 10โ€“20 mA, making them easily powerable by compact 5V solar panels for years of uninterrupted outdoor operation.

4. ๐Ÿ”’ Privacy & Military-Grade Encryptionโ€‹

  • Public Community Mesh: Connect with anyone on the default public channel (LongFast) for neighborhood alerts and general chat.
  • Private Encrypted Groups: Create dedicated AES-256 encrypted channels for your family, rescue team, or organization.
  • Zero-Knowledge Relaying: Intermediate nodes relay encrypted packets without ever being able to read their contents.
